I Made a Huge Mistake... and Asked for a Second Chance
Sometimes, you F up.
Howdy!
This week, I made a big mistake that almost cost me a great opportunity. But because I asked for a second chance, I’ll be able to redeem myself.
As you know, I’m in the process of querying literary agents for my book. So far, two have requested full proposals, which is a huge deal!
One of those agents sent back a detailed email with clarifying questions. She liked my book idea but wasn’t fully convinced yet. She offered to be convinced via email or Zoom and included a link to her calendar.
In my excitement, I immediately replied and asked for her availability.
🚨 BIG MISTAKE.
I didn’t click the link.
She responded with this:
“Hi Jazmine,
You didn’t read my note, apparently. I don’t think we’ll be a good fit. Good wishes with your book. I’m not the right agent for you.”
My face was CRACKEDDDDDDD! And I won’t lie…I cried, lmao.
But honestly, I appreciated the directness. In my line of work, not paying attention to detail is one of my biggest pet peeves. And here I was, not paying attention to detail.
Here’s Where the Asking Comes In:
I won’t share my full reply (it was long), but in short:
I acknowledged my mistake.
I told her I respect her directness.
I *asked* if she’d still be willing to meet for one conversation.
I kept it honest, direct, and to the point.
And guess what?!
She told me to schedule a time with her.
Now, this doesn’t mean she’ll represent me (fingers crossed). But it proves that even when you feel like you’ve blown it, a sincere acknowledgment + a second ask can turn things around.
Now, Tell Me:
Have you ever had to tuck your tail and ask for a second chance?
If not, just tell me—what did you ask for this week?
See y’all next Friday!
